KEEPING US SAFE

Upon assuming office in December 2020 amid the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and xenophobia, Mayor Gloria took swift action to address the rise in anti-Asian hate. He initiated the Safe Place Program, designating local small businesses as safe havens for victims of hate crimes or harassment to report incidents to the police. Collaborating with the San Diego Police Department’s Multi-Cultural Community Relations Office, the mayor facilitated proactive communication, offered crime prevention support, and assisted small business owners and community leaders. Additionally, Mayor Gloria actively engaged with the AAPI community through numerous business walks and town halls, encouraging residents to speak out against discrimination and providing tools for increased vigilance. To streamline reporting, a dedicated “Stop AAPI Hate” reporting center was established on the City of San Diego website under his leadership.
